Channelling our inner fan to celebrate our wins

On Sunday 31st July, England’s Lionesses ended 56 years of hurt by overcoming the goliath task of beating Germany 2-1 in the European Championship final to finally bring football home. It was fantastic to watch the team storm the post-match press conference to celebrate their well-deserved victory.  This got me thinking, how does one of the greatest sporting achievements for decades relate to our daily lives as B2B marketeers?

Our jobs can be incredibly demanding and fast-paced. It can be so easy to not take a moment to relish in obtaining a successful piece of coverage or feel proud when receiving a positive piece of feedback especially when you have a to-do list as long as your arm! But, both individually and as a team, it’s so important to cherish and celebrate the achievements we land no matter how busy we are or how small they may seem.

Celebrating as a team brings us closer together

As the saying goes, there is no I in team. Just as the Lionesses banded together to snatch the winner in the final moments of the game, their victory was a collective effort far beyond the 11 women on the pitch. The manager, the backroom staff and 87,192 roaring fans in a packed Wembley Stadium all played their part in ensuring England’s draught of silverware ended.

For us in the B2B PR and Communications space, the work we do is a collaborative effort. In fact, to be collaborative in what we do is etched into our ethos as one of our core values as a business. Campaigns are divided amongst us, projects shared equally and when we land coverage and deliver results for our clients, it’s celebrated together as one: bringing us closer together as a team. And it’s not just celebrated internally. The brilliant business relationships we nurture with our clients are just as important in acknowledging our success.

Collective acknowledgement of accomplishments is the perfect motivator

There’s nothing quite like the feeling knowing that you’ve done a job well done. It gives us that motivation and reassurance that we can deliver the right results for our clients. Whether it’s celebrating our colleagues landing a piece of coverage or giving a ‘shout out’ to a member of the team who has navigated a particularly tricky client briefing, this helps instil that motivation and drive needed to excel in a demanding work environment. True to our value of being supportive, the Skout family celebrate our wins together and reflect on our losses together.

Champion the small victories just as much as the big wins

Although the Lionesses’ triumph on the biggest of stages is a monumental achievement, that should be rightfully celebrated, it’s important that the small wins that built to the Wembley win are equally acknowledged. Women’s football has come a long way, with many figures in the sport grinding away to secure matches at Premier League stadiums or working tirelessly at a grassroots level to ensure that aspiring female footballers have a route into the sport. England’s European Championship victory is the culmination of numerous small victories to ensure that football is a level playing field for all. We all love landing a piece of coverage in a tier one title or getting a client onto the pages of the national papers, but it’s so important to acknowledge the little things. Whether that’s getting that job that’s been on your list for weeks finally signed off or breaking through the writer’s block to finish an article, just like they state in the film, we all need to ensure we celebrate and enjoy the little things.
